Laura A. Devan, a retired judge and dedicated family law attorney, has spent her career serving the Fayetteville community and advocating for families in North Carolina. With over 30 years of experience in family law, Laura brings a unique blend of compassion, legal expertise, and public service to her practice at Devan & Null PLLC.
Laura graduated with honors from Lafayette College in Pennsylvania, where she was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and earned a BA in History and French. She went on to receive her law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law. While in law school, Laura was deeply involved in advocacy work, volunteering with the Orange-Durham Coalition for Battered Women and the UNC Law Domestic Violence Project.
Her commitment to public service began with her first position at East Central Community Legal Services, where she focused on housing and education law, driven by her goal to make a meaningful impact in poverty-affected communities. Laura moved to Fayetteville in 1995, transitioning to private practice with a specialization in family law while continuing her involvement with local nonprofits.
Over the years, Laura has contributed to the community by serving on various boards, including the Child Advocacy Center, Better Health, Junior League of Fayetteville, Dogwood Festival Committee, the Cape Fear Regional Theater Board, and as a founding member of the Women’s Giving Circle. Laura’s dedication to public service extended to her roles on the State Rules Review Commission and the Local Domestic Relations Steering Committee for Family Court. She currently serves on the advisory board of Fayetteville Animal Protection Society.
In 2008, Governor Easley appointed Laura to a newly created District Court Judgeship in Cumberland County. She won a contested election and served as one of five Family Court Judges, presiding over Family Court, Domestic Violence Court, and Child Support Enforcement Court until 2016. After deciding not to seek re-election, Laura returned to private practice, bringing her extensive judicial experience to her clients in family law matters.
When she’s not advocating for her clients, Laura enjoys volunteering and staying active as an avid runner, frequently participating in local races. Her dedication to family law and her community makes her a trusted advocate for individuals and families in Fayetteville and beyond.
